Are flickering LED lights dangerous?
In some cases, yes! So it’s always a good idea to troubleshoot the problem as soon as possible. LED light bulbs can flicker as a result of several reasons - in this blog, we’ll tell you how to solve each issue.
Why do my LED bulbs flicker? 6 key reasons & how to fix them
LEDs offer a myriad of benefits, making them a great alternative to traditional lighting types like halogen and fluorescent bulbs.
However, if your LED bulb is flickering, then this can indicate a number of potential issues that need to be addressed.
1. Improper installation of LED lights
If LED lights are not installed properly, this can lead to the flickering problem. Improper installation can lead to wire or circuit issues that result in unwanted flickering. Poor installation can also pose several hazards, including:
- Electrical fires
- Explosions
Failure to properly install your LED lighting fixture may also lead to:
- Poor performance
- Excessive energy consumption
- Shorter LED bulb lifespan
As you can see, proper installation of your LED lights is important!
2. Defective components
While modern LED bulbs typically use the latest technology, you might be one of the unlucky few who have a defective LED bulb.
There could be defects with the bulb’s internal components, leading to the light’s continuous flickering. In this case, there’s not much that you can do about it other than return/exchange the bulb and/or replace the LED bulb with a non-defective one.
3. Wiring issues
Loose connections can certainly cause blinking or flickering LED lights - mainly due to poor handling during the installation process. Older homes, in particular, might also have electrical problems, which can lead to flickering lights.
Solution: Ensure wires and cables are connected securely and correctly. If the problem persists, it might be time to call a professional - they can diagnose the root cause and provide expert advice.
4. Bulb issues
The bulb itself might be loose and/or of poor quality. Although high-quality bulbs tend to be more expensive, they will probably save you money in the long run, especially when it comes to repairs and replacements.
Low-quality light bulbs will still work, but don’t expect excellent performance or longevity.
Solution: Check if your LED bulbs are loose and make sure to tighten them if they are. Purchase quality LED light bulbs from suppliers like Vision Lighting. We sell a selection of LED bulbs, from C35 bulbs to GLS A60 bulbs.
5. Incompatible dimmers
Traditional dimmer switches were originally designed for incandescent bulbs that directly alter the amount of current that the light bulb receives. The dimmer switch would also turn the light bulb circuit off and on many times to reduce the amount of energy flowing through the circuit. This meant that lights with dimmers never really went out - they stayed ‘dimmed’.
However, most LED lights weren’t designed with this mechanism - as soon as they’re switched off, they almost immediately stop receiving current. If you’re using old dimmers for your modern LED bulbs, you might encounter flickering issues.
The dimming protocols used in both your LED light and the dimmer switch can also cause flickering. A household bulb can have different dimming requirements to fittings designed for commercial lighting and using the two together can cause incompatibility and issues with flickering.
Solution: Make sure to use LED compatible dimmer switches for your LED lights (if you plan on using dimmers). Don’t forget that your LED lights must also be dimmable.
6. Power problems
There are numerous power problems that you could encounter, resulting in flickering lights. One of the main causes of flickering LED lights is overloaded circuits. Particularly, circuits that are connected to multiple high-load appliances and devices could overload, especially if their currents are more than what the circuit can handle.
If your LED lights are connected to an overloaded circuit, you’ll likely experience flickering lights.
You may also have issues with a faulty power supply which could be causing lights to falter.
Solution: Avoid overloading your circuits, ensuring that your electrical system can handle your LED lighting setup with ease. Additionally, make sure to use a compatible and appropriate power supply for your LED lights. If the issue is with your power supply, ensure this is resolved so that no further damage is done to your LEDs.
Do LED lights flicker at the end of life?
Flickering LED lights could be an indication that your LED bulb is nearing the end of its lifespan. They can also sometimes dim or become discoloured as they head towards their end of life. However, this isn’t always the case. As mentioned above, flickering lights can also signal:
- Wiring issues
- Power problems
- Incompatibility with other products, i.e dimmers
- And more
So, are flickering LED lights dangerous?
In short, yes and no.
While flickering lights are a cause for concern, they’re not always dangerous per se. In some instances, such as faulty wiring, this can lead to hazards like electrical fires, which is why it’s crucial to address flickering lights as soon as possible.
