What is a Flood Light? Everything You Need to Know

Time to upgrade your outdoor lighting? In this guide, we’re talking about all things flood lights.

We cover:

  • What is a flood light
  • Benefits of LED flood lights
  • Things to consider before their installation

Of course, if you’re after the best LED floodlights on the market, simply get in touch - we’re always happy to help.

What is a floodlight?

A floodlight is a form of outdoor lighting that can illuminate a wide area. Floodlights produce high-intensity beams of light, making them useful for a number of different applications. Like their name, they ‘flood’ areas with light. In fact, their beam angle can range from 45 to 120 degrees, dispersing light effectively.

How do I maintain my floodlights?

Floodlights are low maintenance, but taking care of them appropriately can help extend their lifespan and ensure that they perform optimally. To maintain your floodlights, we recommend:

  • Wiping them down with a soft cloth regularly
  • Periodically inspecting them for damage or wear and tear (especially after severe weather such as storms)
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals when cleaning

Which is better: LED or halogen floodlights?

Traditional floodlights used halogen bulbs, but since the halogen bulb ban, LED (light emitting diode) floodlights have become the more popular (and better) choice.

If you’re ever in doubt about whether to pick between LED or another lighting option, choose the former! LEDs are a great alternative to halogen when it comes to being better for the environment and our wallet.

Our 30W LED floodlights are energy-efficient and versatile, with enhanced longevity and durability (read more on benefits below!) compared to their 300W halogen counterparts.

Can I put a regular light bulb in a floodlight?

No. A regular bulb will not work correctly in a floodlight. As floodlights are often used for outdoor applications, this means that they will need an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of at least 65 (IP65). This means that the lighting fixture must be able to withstand certain water pressure without compromising its functionality. Standard bulbs will not always have an IP rating of 65, meaning that they are not suitable for outdoor floodlights.

Floodlights will also need a specific type of bulb, depending on its design. For example, floodlights require reflector bulbs such as the PAR, MR, BR, ER, or R bulbs.

Some flood lights do sometimes have replaceable bulbs but this is more common with metal halide or halogen floodlights. Some LED floodlights can be replaced but this requires more technical skills.

Benefits of an LED floodlight

Energy-efficiency

LED floodlights are known to be highly energy-efficient, consuming less energy than their traditional counterparts (like halogen, for instance). Modern LED floodlights use 80% less energy compared to traditional halogen floodlights.

High lumen output

Lumens refer to the amount of light that’s emitted from a light bulb. The higher the lumen output, the more intense the light source is. LED floodlights have a lumen output ranging between 700 to 20,000+ lumens, making them a versatile lighting solution for a wide number of applications. This also means that they can emit more light that’s brighter at lower energy consumption. For example, 50W floodlights provide the same brightness and illumination as 400W to 500W halogen floodlights!

Eco-friendly

LED light bulbs are incredibly eco-friendly - especially when compared to traditional bulbs like halogens. This is due to the fact that they consume less electricity when in use, and they also contain no toxic materials like mercury.

Produces less heat

All lighting solutions will generate heat - however, LED floodlights are much cooler than halogen floodlights, offering a cooler thermal output.

Many floodlights including our own Trade LED ranges (including our 30W, 50W and 100W floodlights) have built in heat sinks that help to manage heat.

This can be beneficial for multiple applications where high temperatures can be hazardous, i.e manufacturing or industrial buildings. They are also unlikely to reach a temperature that can start a fire.

Long-lasting

LED floodlights have a lifespan of 25,000 to 50,000 hours, depending on the installation, bulb quality, weather, and manufacturing of the floodlight itself. To compare, halogen floodlights typically lasted up to 20,000 hours maximum.

Cost-efficiency

While LED floodlights might seem expensive initially, they are actually cost-efficient in the long run. This is because LED light bulbs last longer and consume less energy. As a result, you don’t have to worry about replacing your LED light bulbs as frequently as you would with halogen bulbs.

Things to consider when installing your floodlights

Now that you know the answer to, ‘What is a flood light?’, if you’re thinking about purchasing LED floodlights, you’ll also need to consider how to install them properly to maximise their potential.

Here are a few things that you should consider:

  • Position - floodlights should be strategically positioned and angled to illuminate specific areas effectively
  • Floorstanding or fitted - floodlights can either be recessed into the floor or fitted on posts/suspended on a gantry, or even attached to buildings or trees
